Bringing UK FinTech companies and global investors together for a dynamic matchmaking event.

Taking place in the uber-cool London Tobacco Dock, HM Treasury’s International FinTech Conference connected investor delegates with the UK’s up-and-coming Fintech companies.

This was to be no ordinary ‘trade fair’: it was a contemporary and dynamic combination of conference and exhibition, showcasing 125 companies and interacting with nearly 1,000 global investors.

What we came up with.

HM Treasury wanted to avoid any sense of stuffiness or traditionalism – they were keen to have an event that reflected the technology, innovation and entrepreneurship being supported. Tobacco Dock is all about pared-back style and flexibility, so we made the most of the generous venue space by dressing it with high-impact graphics and lighting, and designing the layout to accommodate a dynamic festival-style agenda. This would encourage delegates to move freely between the main stage, workshops and breakout sessions that interested them most.

Because the venue is pretty much just a shell, we designed, planned and built the entire environment for the event from the ground up, making sure that it looked and felt the part, as well as delivering all the functionality that would be needed. Naturally, we also produced all the necessary technical drawings, delegate flow planning and risk assessments needed to keep things on track. Thinking of everything is also what we do, such as bringing in extra heating to keep the March chill off our delegates. We created privacy by deploying our taller team members to apply frosting to the venue’s many glass walls and dividers. And we arranged and managed all the services normally taken for granted in hotels, even including details such as first aid provision and toilet cleaning (yes, that was personally handled by us, too).

We also arranged accommodation and catering for everyone delivering the event, including third-party suppliers, during the build and on the day itself.

Legacy.

Our in-house delegate registration system smoothly handled over 1,000 pre-event registrations, sending out welcome emails and joining instructions, and providing useful and engaging content via the event app. This included personalised agendas, exhibitor profiles and information on sponsors. The interactive app also captured valuable feedback for the event as a whole, for separate sessions, and for individual speakers.

The event provided valuable content, including thought leadership, panels and workshops from global industry leaders, investors, policy makers and regulators. Keynote presenters included Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Rt Hon Philip Hammond, and – exceptionally - CEOs from all five of the UK’s top banks.

The conference started with a little light networking over a VIP breakfast, and at the end of the day, participants were able to raise a glass (or two) at an informal drinks reception, while hopefully sealing a few deals along the way.
